New rural hospitals for mother and child (under construction)

In the north-west of Tanzania, the Red Rose Foundation is building the 1st of 4 new rural maternity hospitals, to assist tens of thousands of local mothers giving birth.    The first hospital (see photos) is the "St. Anne & Joachim - Red Rose Hospital". It is a typical C-shaped Tanzanian rural hospital, measuring approx. 3000 square feet plus a courtyard.

The main beneficiaries of the project are mothers and children of Kirando district, Rukwa region. In fact, this hospital is designed to assist up to 500 children and 500 mothers per year, offering perinatal, postnatal and infant medical care. It is estimated that it will help up to 5,000 mothers and children in just the first 10 years of operation.

The hospital is located in the Rukwa region, a region that has approximately 1.5 million inhabitants, and a surface area slightly smaller than that of Vermont. It is one of the poorest in the country, located as it is on the border with the Democratic Republic of Congo. The region also has one of the highest population growth rates in Tanzania (4.4%) and one of the highest home birth rates (69.9%) rather than hospital births.
