The project is located in the Toliara region (southern Madagascar), which is the poorest in the country. The importance of the schooling project in the area is undeniable: the closest school was more than 15km from the village, and it was impossible for the children to walk more than 30km every day to go to school. For this reason, none of the more than 90 children in the village had learned to read and write.

After starting school in a temporary location, Rosa Rossa financed the construction of the first brick school building:  the “Sainte Marie de la Misericorde – Rosa Rossa” Primary School.

Rosa Rossa also donated the land to build 2 sports fields for children, namely the soccer field and the volleyball field. Among the objectives of the sports program is that of contributing to the good socialization of the children, and to the prevention of various social problems typical of areas where there are no TVs, mobile phones or bicycles. In fact, these are the first football/volleyball fields not only in the village, but in the entire district.  The football field (sponsored by an English donor) especially caught the attention of the village, and the first football match was played in July 2019.

construction phases

Rosa Rossa financed the purchase of the building materials and specialised manpower.   The local villagers also contributed with manpower and material handling.  Thanks to the good will of all of them, in four months the school was built and ready to be used.

school inauguration

After four months of work, the school was opened in October 2019 and thanks to its two classrooms, it can accommodate up to 140 students including children aged 6 to 13 and 40 seniors.
The two teachers drew up a well-thought-out alphabetisation program.

Thanks to their lessons, adults and children learned how to count, read and write.  This school complex has become a center of interest and an example for the other surrounding communities.

Statistics:

  • 975 hours of lessons per year
